2nd birthday in sandland...

taking a break from travel blogging (ok, i know i've been lazy. will find the mood to continue with my turkey trip soon! hehe), i guess i need to record down this annual event of my life lar: my birthday. last year was nothing special, just an ordinary weekend in my ordinary life. this year, i'd LOVE to say that it was very special, but hehe... it's quite ordinary as well :P

the greetings started coming in at the stroke of midnight, or rather, at the stroke of midnight m'sian time! so touched that my buddies and friends remembered, especially since i've removed my birthday from facebook :")

anyway, had a mini meltdown for a while, right after i sent an sms to my mom to thank her for everything. another year away from my family and loved ones! but all is good, so pulled myself up, regrouped, and went about the rest of my day as per normal.

as it was a working day, my colleagues prepared a cake for me. it's actually quite standard lar, as we have a departmental budget for these kinda things... but it was quite sweet just the same.

cake pic with instagram...

with my departmental colleagues...

haha... look at that long knife! and i didn't realize my colleague was posing behind me like that! :D

the cake was so chocolaty and thick (as in consistency) that it was so difficult to cut into!

stargal: boss, what is this? *showing the photo*
boss: omygad, who is that?
stargal: boss, u're the only one wearing blue today =_='''
boss: i dunno what u're talking about. so many people wearing blue today *pointing at my other colleagues whom none of them were wearing blue*

with our director. this other colleague's birthday is this coming weekend, so we sang her a song as well... :)

well, that's another year in the bag!

day 1: airport drama and first glimpse of istanbul

the day before my trip, i received an sms from my travel companion, lovely lily, that her flight was delayed and she might have to meet me at the airport for our departure. she was on her yearly vacation back to fiji and was supposed to arrive back in dubai one day before we're to depart for turkey. but her flight from nz-hk-dubai (there're no direct flights from fiji, and she was in nz for a visit to her cousin) was delayed due to some technical problems, so she'll only be arriving in dubai on the morning of our departure date. the problem is, our departure time for turkey was also in the morning! so i was kinda stressed out the night before, as she did not communicate to me what time she'll be arriving in dubai. i stayed up till quite late coz she said she'll give me a call when she reaches dubai and i expected her to arrive in the wee morning hours. but when she's still not called (and her phone remained off when i tried calling her) by 2am, i decided that i need to get some sleep for our morning flight! i had a fitful sleep, waking up a few times to check my phone to see if there's a missed call or an sms or if my sms to her went through.

my sms finally got thru to her when i was on my way to the airport at 6.00am, so i called her immediately. she said she's just arrived and will go to the check-in counter directly after clearing immigration. i reminded her that our flight is at 8am and the counter closes one hour before.

sitting patiently (at least TRYING to be patient!) at the check-in hall... 15 more minutes before the counters close, where the hell is she lar???

one thing you need to know about dubai airport is, the lines at the immigration are always long regardless the time of the day. even if you arrive at 2am, you'd still be standing in line for up to 1 hour! so you can all guess correctly that lovely lily didn't make it to the check-in counter in time. she only called me when i was walking along the aisle of the plane looking for my seat, that she was refused from checking-in. it's no wonder, as it was already half an hour before departure.

actually i went to the counter people and explained my friend's predicament, begging them to wait a bit longer but they said lovely lily should've gone to the transit/transfer desk, instead of going thru the immigration, which would be wasting so much time! however, by the time i conveyed this to lovely lily, it's already 1 hour after her arrival and her luggage would've been out by then. in the end, i had to fly alone to istanbul and wait for her to arrange another flight to join me there. so the moral of the story is, don't plan your flights back-to-back as there's no guarantee that things would run as expected, especially flight schedules! so much airport drama...

checked-in at our hotel in istanbul, yusuf pasa konagi, a little hotel of only 24 rooms right smack in the touristy sultanahmet area. very clean and cosy hotel, with nice and friendly staff.

the room comes with a hamam-styled bathroom (hamam = turkish bath)! who needs to go to the bathhouses when you have one right in your room? but sitting on the marble slab to scrub yourself definitely took some getting used to...

they even provided several types of handmade soap that turkey is famous for, as well as a few other amenities for your hamam needs...

as it was still quite early in the evening, i decided to venture out to get my bearings and for some familiarization...

passed by a lot of stalls and shops...

it was quite safe walking on the streets here and the people were really friendly. i was even dragged by a few shoppers into their shops to be served apple tea, and i didn't feel threatened or afraid for my life or worried i'd get conned into buying their carpets/ceramic wares/knick-knacks etc. they just loved visitors and it's just their way of showing us the turkish hospitality, at the same time explaining to us about their trade. of course, it'll be nice if we bought something but if we didn't buy anything, that's ok too!

following the direction and map given to me by the hotel concierge, i made my way to the sultanahmet camii, or blue mosque. didn't go in tho', as i would be having my official tour with a guide the next day. anyway, as i found out from my guide the next day, when turkey was a monarchy previously, the sultan used to go to the mosque on horseback. but even tho' he's the sultan, he would still need to show humility when entering the house of god. hence these chains were placed at the entrance here and at another gate so that the sultan had to bend down (bow) when going in. now of course, turkey has no sultan anymore but these chains were left here to remind all visitors to enter with a humble heart, even tho' we don't need to bow coz we're entering on foot.

at a square next to the blue mosque, saw this candy seller. the candy is called "osmanli macunu" and the way the seller twirled it was quite interesting, tho' i didn't try coz it looked quite sweet!

met this uncle at the square too, who stood there everyday in the sun earning money from people who wanna take photos with him. luckily he didn't ask money from me for snapping this photo!

there were many street vendors at the square and as i was feeling slightly hungry, i decided to try this for 2 turkish lira (about RM4). not as tasty as it looked tho'. it's just bread sprinkled with cinnamon powder and peanuts. tasted quite bland and it's hard!

view of the blue mosque from the square...

next, i wanted to go to the hippodrome, but have no idea where it is. so i just walked about aimlessly, going up side streets, looking into shop windows, talking to friendly vendors and shop owners... basically just getting lost and whiling away the time. it's great coz i felt so safe and knew that however lost i get, i'd still be able to find my way back to the hotel.

this is their tram! very modern looking, like the metro in dubai. when i was doing my research on istanbul and read about this tram, i thought it's gonna be those old and antiquated trams, so can just imagine my surprise when i saw this! :D

there were lotsa such sidewalk cafes dotting the area... very european style!

the many sweets, desserts and food shops i passed by...

i even wandered into a little cemetery! lol...

freshly squeezed pomegranate + grape fruit juice seemed to be very popular here, as you can see a lot of vendors and shops selling them...

after awhile, walking along the street going nowhere in particular, i found myself in the fatih district, right in front of the famous grand bazaar! didn't take any photos, but basically it's just a big covered building with lotsa stalls inside (5,000 stalls according to their website!), selling stuff like spices, earthenware, ceramics, tea, turkish delight, baklava, soaps, jewelleries, carpets, souvenirs etc etc. after awhile, all the streets looked the same and selling the same stuff, that i just wanted to get out of there! also, my feet were beginning to ache, so since i've no desire to buy anything (as it's just my first day here and i'd be flying off to other parts of turkey for the rest of my vacation and didn't wish to lug so much shopping with me), i just looked for an exit and made my way slowly back to the hotel.

april is the tulip season in istanbul that they're dubbed as the 2nd holland. so many colourful tulips around, in the park, gardens, roadside etc.

it was already quite late when i got out from the grand bazaar but as they're on daylight saving, the sky was still bright. this pic was taken at around 8.15pm...

coming from the other side of the street, i finally found the hippodrome! it's actually just right at the back of the blue mosque!

there's not much that remained from the hippodrome of the constantinople, only 2 obelisks and a half-broken serpent column. originally, this hippodrome was where the chariot race took place, and it's the only place and time where the common people get to see their (roman) emperor once a year.

photo of the ruins of hippodrome from the late 15th century, copied from wikipedia. today, the structures surrounding the racetrack and the many columns in the middle were gone.

on the way back to the hotel, i stopped at an outdoor restaurant for dinner. here's my chicken kebab and apple tea. quite yummy, tho' the chili was so charred! :D

the apple tea that i kept getting served. i must've drank half a gallon of these! but they were quite nice, tho' a bit too sweet for my palate. at the end of day 1, i learnt to ask them to hold the sugar and just place a lump on the saucer in case they come unsweetened.

the restaurant had a stage for the whirling dervish performance. i find that they whirled a bit slower compared to those "carpet dance" we have in dubai... they seemed almost like in a trance! and unlike those in dubai where the dancer wears layers upon layers of cloth on them (hence the "carpet" reference! :P) and will take them off, put them on again and also make them into various shapes and sizes, these whirling dervish dancers just go round and round and round...

it was about 10.30pm when i got back to the hotel, so after an awkward self-hamam bath and a short check-in on facebook (free wi-fi, woo-hoo!), i decided i better retire early for the next day's tour. stay tuned!

*more photos on my facebook, for those who're in my friends list :)

picmonkey photo editor - it's in english!

a few days ago, i wrote about meitu xiu xiu photo editor, a chinese based photo editing tool for our photo beautification needs. it's a good app but for the chinese language-challenged lot, it does pose a bit of a... well, challenge.

so just imagine my delight when i came across a post by howaboutorange talking about picmonkey, an online photo editing website. if you're a picasaweb user, you'll know about picnik, and also the fact that they're no longer available to people without a google+ account. that's not really a problem with me as i have an account, but i decided to check picmonkey out anyway, just for the heck of it (and also coz i'm attracted to its quirky name).

anyway, the team behind picmonkey is the former engineers of picnik (which maybe explains the "pic" in the names), and they've decided to come up with this new website after picnik was bought over by google. like meitu xiu xiu, it's free without a need for registration, meaning anyone can just pop in there and start editing their photos without having to have everything connected to each other (email connected to your facebook, which is connected to your twitter, which in turn is connected to your picasaweb account and your flickr and god knows what else...).

for those who've used picnik before, you'd notice that while picnik's interface is more on cute butterflies-ladybugs-picnic-basket-ish look and feel, picmonkey's is more cool-summer-laid-back-yesteryears-ish feel. and it offers much more cooler photo effects than picnik! for now, all the cool effects are free, but i suspect they're gonna start charging for those tagged with the "monkey king" head soon, something like added features or extra special effects or whatever.

one thing that i noticed lacking in picmonkey that meitu xiu xiu has is the background feature, that i specifically wrote about previously. but they do have some cool frames and other features that we can play around with. here's a sample:

this is a sample photo that's provided by picmonkey for us to edit and play around...

here's another sample photo by picmonkey. to get this effect, i chose the frame feature, daguerreotype effect #2 and the film effect of "brady" (all circled in red), and a fade of 0%... the top photo is the same, only with the fade of 25%. so cool, right? oh, see that crown thing i circled in blue? that's an indication that this is a "monkey king" feature, so it MAY mean that it won't be free anymore next time!

ski dubai

this is a damn long overdue post... :P

late last year, a trainee from our sister property in penang came over for a month of cross exposure, and was based in my department. so being the head of the department, other than making sure she's well-taken care of in terms of living arrangements, daily needs etc, as well as getting the proper "exposure" on the job, i should also properly introduce her to the city, it being her first time here and all... what a good excuse reason to go out jalan-jalan and be all touristy, right? :P

anyway, i've been in sandland for more than a year, and still i've not been to the famous snow mountain right smack in the middle of the desert. so what better time to do it than now?

actually we didn't plan to go here. my trainee, shopaholic shelby, is... well, as the name suggested, a shopaholic.  so as ski dubai is located inside mall of the emirates, we decided to go in while we were shopping at the mall.

boots, jumper, gloves and socks are already costed in the entrance fee... and we get to keep the gloves and socks.

quite excited to be touching snow, albeit man-made (i don't think this was my first time touching snow, but all are man-made ones). don't be deceived by the happy smile. it's blardy cold in there! we were breathing frost out of our mouths...

snow! :D

there are a few rides and "snow games" in the snow park area, like this sled...

riding down the slope on twin tubes...

rolling down the slope in this giant ball...

actually i was afraid to try this, coz i thot i'd be really ROLLING down the hill. i dun wanna puke all over the snow and embarrass myself! but then i found out we won't be really "rolling" inside the ball. as you can see in the picture, i'm halfway down the hill and still in the sitting position. the inside of the ball is slippery and so we're actually just sliding along inside while the ball is rolling...

but after rolling down, we need to trudge back up the hill, which is mighty hard work!

our entrance ticket included a ride on the ski lift up the snow slope...

we're not allowed to disembark when we arrived at the top, coz we're not skiers. we could only remain on the ski lift and ride down the slope again. the top is quite far and high up!

our pass was for whole day, but we lasted for only 1 hour coz we were freezing! even our toes have started to numb from the cold... here's one last camwhoring before we exit.

meitu xiuxiu photo editor

updated (19 apr 2012): if you're looking for an english based photo editor, read this!

sweet sheila introduced me to this super easy to use photo editor, meitu xiu xiu (美图秀秀). unfortunately, it's all in chinese (for now. let's all cross our fingers and hope they come up with an english version very soon!) anyway, it's still a good photo editor app and if u're not doing any serious designing or photo editing work, i feel this is good enough for us. and really, it's quite straightforward and easy to understand, even for a banana like me!

still, if u're really clueless about which button to click on, you can refer to this blog which i came across for a quick basic tutorial in english.

they have a web version, so you can choose to either download it or work with the web version. you can either click on the link or from the main xiuxiu.meitu.com page, choose the web version as circled in the pic below. my chrome browser automatically translates everything into english (except those embedded text lah), so your browser might not show the same english words as below.
as you can see, they even have versions for iphone, android and ipad!

for those of you bananas who can understand spoken chinese, you can also go through the video tutorials by clicking the button as circled in the pic below.
so many types of tutorial to suit your needs...

anyway, biow was asking me about the background that i used for my globetrotter amineko in my craft blog. so here's where you click to add the background, as circled and numbered below.
there are lots of background to choose from!

other than these features, there are many more other features to play around with, such as lomo, vignetted,  cosmetics, adding in icons, texts, etc etc. so just take your time to explore, click all the buttons and see what they do! it's kinda fun! :)

nothing like a bit of pain...

so i was feeling a lil under the weather yesterday... i was once again questioning my decision to be based in this desert country, far from my family, friends and all the things that i'm comfortable and familiar with. i missed all the good (and not to mention cheap) food back home, i missed driving, i missed my best friend's wedding...

and i was particularly bummed when i couldn't think of anyone to ask along to the oliver! musical that's making its way here next month! am i really friendless here? none of the people i know here share the same passions for the things i like.  i get weird looks when i tell some people that i do horse riding, and i'd have so many friends who would go to the oliver! musicals with me if i'm back home.

so with my mood being so cloudy, i had half a mind of not showing up for my riding lesson after work yesterday. but then i thought about all the money that i've paid for my lessons and if i don't show up, the lesson would be burnt coz we can only cancel a lesson one day earlier.

but my mood changed when i arrived at the riding school, with the horses and riders, and just being outdoors. the weather nowadays is at around 28-ish deg C, so it's really a perfect time to be out of doors. anyway, i got a brown mid-sized stallion named bahrain yesterday, and he was a dream! i think he's new at the school, coz i've not ridden him before and all the trainers were paying close attention to his performance yesterday. he seemed a bit naughty at first. when i was standing next to him stroking his cheeks and neck while the groom was tightening up his girth and getting him ready, he kept trying to get his mouth near my hands. i gave him my upturned palm to show that it's empty, but he still tried to bite my gloves. even when i stepped away from his head and closer to his body, he'll keep turning his head around and trying to bite me. so i thought he's gonna be a problem but when i asked my trainer (i got a lady trainer yesterday), she said, "he's ok, unlike sebastian" (i fell off sebastian AGAIN last week! - i'm blacklisting him now).

anyway, once i've mounted bahrain, he's just so responsive and did all the things i wanted him to do effortlessly. and he's so easy to ride! i love him! but then disaster struck... we were going through our exercises and after a  fast and long canter, my trainer gave the cue for us to trot. i was just starting to rein bahrain in when suddenly one of his front hooves tripped on the sand! his head fell forward and as i was having a tight hold on the reins, he pulled me forward as well. i lost my balance, leaned forward onto his neck but couldn't hold on tight enough and sort of rolled off his neck onto the ground! argh!!!

it was not a really bad fall, nothing serious... just made me a little sore in the rump. i got right up, remount and continued on with the lesson.

after the lesson, as i was walking towards the metro station with a slight muscle sore, i was quite surprised when i realized that my spirits have lifted. i'm not moody anymore, but was actually smiling and feeling quite happy! weird, huh?

hmm... maybe it's the adrenalin rush that came from exercising and sweating out buckets, but i have the suspicion that it's also due to the muscle aches and pains that made me feel alive again. maybe this sensation reminded my subconscious that however numb we've become, we're still capable of feelings, both physically and mentally. then dunno why, suddenly a saying cropped into my mind: "we're all spiritual beings going through a human experience". so we should appreciate and enjoy this experience, the whole sweet, sour, bitter and spicy of it, an experience which only a human can go through.

maybe a bit of pain is not so bad after all! :)

riding on the efforts of others…

warning: ranting post ahead!

the manipulator

this morning, ms. blackberry* came over and asked me to tune into the internet radio. at first i thought it was an instruction by her boss (the gm), coz we're recently running a radio ad campaign. so i thought the boss wants me to monitor the ad, and asked her to pass on the message. then she added, "it's so boring here. we should have some form of entertainment and music. leave it on, and i'll speak to boss about it."

at first i didn't really catch on that this was her own idea but luckily, i have my earphones semi-permanently attached to my cpu and i was lazy to reach down to unplug it. so i told her it can't be done and asked her to do it from her side. she went back to her desk, but no music came from her pc.

then i realized, "damn, it wasn't the boss's instruction. she just wanted to use me!" damn damn damn!!! if my earphones weren't connected to my cpu, i'd have bodoh-bodoh (malay: stupidly) played the radio and when gm walks pass, he'll think, "wah, this girl so free. enjoying life here." what the hell lah!

*nicknamed as such due to the fact that she's on her blackberry the whole day in the office, facebooking, sms-ing, messaging etc. there's even talk that it's stuck to her hands permanently, like a mutated growth or something!

the rider

my company has this staff benefit whereby we are allowed to claim our taxi fare to selected destinations such as a mall or beach park etc. of course, there are conditions but yeah, we have such benefits.

anyway, there's this colleague, yakking yvette, who somehow always refuse to submit for the transportation claims, due to certain reasons that i'm not convenient to divulge here. ok fine, if that's your stand. but then, she'll still happily tag along and benefit from the free transportation whenever we go to those selected destination. so it's ok if other people makes the claim, which benefits you, but it's not ok for you to submit the claim? how hypocrite is that?!

the body huggers

in the recent green campaign that took place in m'sia (and even the "cleaning" campaign of last year), i've noticed a category of people among my facebook friends. while most of my friends shared information, videos and links about the issue, some expressing their own opinions and anger on their status updates, take part in impromptu discussions, or even just simply changed their profile photos to show their support to the movement, there were some who decided that they don't want to have anything whatsoever to do with it.

in this time and age, it's impossible that they don't know anything at all about the issue. even if the mainstream media tried to mute it as much as possible, it's all over the internet, on online independent media and facebook. aren't they at least a tiny bit curious as to why is it that most of their friends' profile photos have suddenly taken on a greenish theme? of course everyone would know the significance of it, unless they've been in a coma for the past one year. hence we can safely rule out "ignorance" as the reason.

so why aren't some of them showing any form of acknowledgement to the campaign? don't they care about what is happening to our country? i'm sure they care, coz i know my friends are not cold-blooded people. maybe they feel that it's not happening in their city, hence it has nothing to do with them? or maybe they feel that it's a futile exercise, all these protesting and gathering. after all, it's been approved by the gov. what can we do, right? nothing's gonna change. or maybe they're just afraid? all these anti-this anti-that, what if the authorities decided to take action on those who support the cause? at least they won't be incriminated.

or maybe they think that there are so many others in the bandwagon already. so it's ok for them to berpeluk tubuh (malay: hug their own body - meaning have their arms crossed and not doing anything), coz one more supporter or one less supporter won't really make any difference. after all, i'm not good at talking, i can't express my views so well, i'm this and i'm that, bla bla bla all the excuses in the world... let the others who are more outspoken do all the work and hopefully they'll succeed. then it'll benefit everyone, including ME!

well, i know i can't force anyone to support anything that i believe in or am passionate about but it's really disheartening to see people who don't give a damn about anything. especially if it's something that will and does affect them and their families too! it's not like we're asking them to lead or start something. all these campaigns need are a show of support, even in the smallest gesture, just to let them know that they have our backing and that they're not alone.

the planters

there are some people who are very good planters... not of plants, but ideas. they'll try to plant a certain idea into you, and then sorta passed the responsibilities on to you to act on it while they take a seat back and let you do all the work.

once, 2 of my colleagues wanted to go for steamboat at a restaurant and asked me, sweet sheila and yakking yvette if we would like to join. we agreed but sweet sheila wondered aloud if it’s at the same restaurant that she went before. according to her, that restaurant’s steamboat is not nice at all!

upon reaching the building where the restaurant is, sweet sheila confirmed that it was really the same restaurant. so the whole way going up to the restaurant, which was situated at the upstairs terrace of the building, sweet sheila kept telling me how bad the food at the restaurant is. my 2 other colleagues were walking some distance in front of us, so sweet sheila kept trying to convince me to change venue. “trust me, the food there is really bad! it’ll be better if we go to the steamboat at “little lamb”. this restaurant caters mostly to filipinas. not our taste at all! really, you wouldn’t like it!”

she kept right on at it, buzzing non-stop at my ears, that finally i can’t take it anymore. i turned coolly to her and said, “if you want to propose a change of venue, say it out to everybody. stop buzzing around at my ears coz i’ll never open my mouth for you. first of all, it wasn’t me who suggested this place. we are just tagging along. secondly, i’ve not eaten at this place before. so don’t expect me to tell everyone that the food is not nice.” that shut her up nicely for the rest of the night…

another time, yakking yvette was telling me about her roommate's departmental outing and how much fun her roommate had. then she proceeded to sorta complain that our department never does such things and how nice it would be if we could have something like this.

now, if i don't know yakking yvette that well, i'd have jumped right into her trap and say, "let's plan something!" but i saw right through her ploy! if i'd have said that, then the task would definitely be placed upon my shoulders and i'd be the official organizer for the departmental outing.

if it were someone else, maybe i'd have very happily want to plan something TOGETHER. but now i've come to recognize the few "planters" here (through the hard way, unfortunately!), so my answer to their manipulation would be, "good idea! why not you plan one?", making sure to emphasize on the word YOU.

well, in my previous life (meaning life back home lar), i'd probably be very gung-ho in wanting to organize an outing or trip etc. anything the spells FUN! but that also would need to depend on for whom i'm organizing it for. which brings me to my last category of "riders" as per the title of this post...

the wait-and-seers

i really hate it when we put so much time and energy and effort into organizing something, only to be met with lukewarm or even cold responses. when we throw ideas around, everyone would be very excited but when the e-mail is sent out, no one would want to be the first to reply. everyone wants to wait and see what other people say. in the end no one will reply, which then makes us feel like we're just syiok sendiri (malay: excited/happy about something only you yourself is excited/happy about).

so nowadays, i'll refrain from organizing anything that involves a big group, unless i know the group is as gung-ho as me. luckily my makan group is always very responsive to foodie-outing proposals, so i don't mind doing that. besides, other members of the group are also always organizing stuff, it's not always organized by me.

for other stuff like shopping, outing or just going for dinner, normally i'll just throw the idea with my artist. if both of us are game for it, then we'll ask anyone who would like to join. if no one else wants to go, we'll just go by ourselves. easy peasy...

and if there's something i'd like to do for say, a celebration or event, i'd do it by myself instead of plan it with someone else and making a big deal out of it. that way, i do it on my own free will, in my own time and capacity, instead of having to wait for others. one good example was what i prepared for a few of my colleagues during valentine's day.

phew, ok. that was a long rant... but just getting things off my chest! :)

flying 1st class, woo-hoo!

i guess this dragon year is treating me quite well, what with me not having to pay extra for going on the next day’s flight when i missed my homeward-bound flight… but i was also being upgraded to first class on the 1st leg of my flight back to dubai!!

at the boarding gate in klia, i was just about to sit down when i heard my name being paged over the pa system. at first i thought there’s something wrong with my boarding pass or maybe i’ve somehow gone to the wrong gate. but when i went to the desk, one of the staff (not sure if he’s airport staff or the airline staff) asked to see my boarding pass. when i handed it to him, he looked at it to verify that i’m indeed the person they paged for, and exchanged it for a red-coloured pass, telling me, “you’ve been upgraded to 1st class. it’s a lucky dragon year for you.” i was like, “huh? omg, thank you!”

in a daze, i only heard “upgraded”, but not “1st class”. so i thought i was being upgraded to business class and quickly updated my facebook status: “omg, i’ve juz been upgraded to biz class!” coz i’ve never been one who wins lucky draws and 4D and those kinda things, so getting upgraded to biz class is like omg, so lucky already! it never occurred to me that i’d get 1st class! LOL

anyway, when they called for boarding, normally i would to be one of the last to get up to join the queue, to let all the kiasu people stand in the queue all they want. it’s not like they will fly off earlier than the rest of us, right? but now i’m the holder of a RED boarding pass ler! so when they called for boarding, i just coolly stood up and walked right up to the front of the line (of those with cattle class pass – see how kiasu? everyone knows econ class boards last, but they will still stand up and rush to the gate when the announcement specifically said “1st class and biz class”). ok, i admit i was quite smug when i showed my RED boarding pass and continue walking into the separate aerobridge for 1st and biz class, while the rest of the unwashed looked enviously after my retreating shadow (as pictured in my mind lar :P)

i was quite looking forward to getting a good rest on the flight, as i had to wake up at 5am that morning to make it for my 9am flight. but as it’s not everyday that i got upgraded, of course i had to check out that section behind the closed curtains where normally we can only catch a glimpse of!

too bad it’s quite an old plane, but luckily they made it up with their good service!

P1100213was offered a hot towel and juice the moment i sat down… not from the trolley, mind you, but from a tray! the seat configuration was 1-2-1 and i got the window seat. there are these compartments next to the seat that i can store my hand carry bags in, as shown in the pic. no need to use the overhead compartments, which means i can just reach in and out to access my stuff without having to stand up. me likey! :)

P1100215look at the leg space! i lifted up my legs and stretched out straight, and i still couldn’t touch the divider in front.

P1100216checking out my seat functions. like i said, it’s an old plane, so the the buttons are not so sophisticated. but i love the compartments below, where i can put away my book and camera etc.

P1100217 on the other side of my seat, you can actually raise the hand rest to become some sort of divider for more privacy. sorry, no pic of the divider in the up position, coz i didn’t pull it up…

P1100226table out from its compartment on the left (see the lid there? compare it to the first pic on top). and got table cloth ler! :D

P1100228 breakfast time… everything served on real plates, bowls, cups and saucers, and the utensils don’t come in a plastic bag. i was so tempted to nick the cute salt and pepper shakers, but of course i didn’t :P

P1100230 my egg omelette that came piping hot straight from the kitchen, not from the trolley!

P1100225 time to relax after a very full breakfast, which i didn’t finish coz i had breakfast before boarding at mcD with my parents, bro and SIL, and my cousin oliver (who is an aircraft engineer and was on duty at klia that day). was contemplating on watching some in-flight movie, but tv was kinda small even though you can pull it out to be nearer to you, and also the movie selections were not that great.

P1100235 so decided to do a bit of reading with the seat reclined at 75% down (we can actually recline to 180 deg flat!). they have the normal overhead reading lights, but i love this personal reading light by the side of the seat…

i dozed off for a bit, but i think only for 15 min. then it’s time to land at my transit destination at colombo, sri lanka. haiz, time really flies when we’re having fun, huh? all in all, it was a rather sweet 3hrs plus flight experience. i was back to flying cattle class for my colombo – dubai leg of the journey… :(

anyway, i must say sri lanka air has given me a really impression of their staff and service. but i can’t say i’d fly with them again, if i can help it. the reason will be in another post, as this post has gotten quite long… so stay tuned! :)

p/s: i found out i was actually on 1st class and not biz class while i was having an ice-blended green tea frappe at the colombo airport’s coffee bean. a fellow malaysian who was on the same flight as me was also having a drink there and when he saw me, he called out to me by my full name coz he heard it being paged in klia. it’s kinda irritating actually, coz he kept calling my full name whenever he wanted to engage me in a conversation. but anyway, he told me he was upgraded to biz class right before my name was called, and he was so jealous that i got 1st class. then only it dawned on me that i should’ve realized mine didn’t looked like biz class, coz biz class would most probably have the seat configuration of 2-3-2. aiyo, shows what a country bumpkin i am, for not recognizing that immediately! :D
